Gout Foods List

Very High Purine List

 The following foods have very high purine levels, and should be eliminated when a gout attack is under way, otherwise use care; NEVER eat fructose, HFCS and sugar for gout and MANY other reasons.

I eat plenty of them just not too often as a group. For example I usually eat a can of salmon once a week or so, liver, heart  and sardines often but all the rest infrequently. When I feel an attack is coming I eliminate everything on this list for two weeks at least.

  • Anchovies
  • Bouillon
  • Brains
  • Broth
  • Consommé
  • Dried legumes 
  • FRUCTOSE   the worst
  • Goose
  • Gravy
  • Heart
  • HFCS  very bad
  • Herring
  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Mackerel
  • Meat extracts
  • Mincemeat
  • Mussels
  • Partridge
  • Roe
  • Sardines
  • Salmon
  • Scallops
  • Shrimp
  • SUGAR   very bad
  • Sweetbreads
  • Yeast (baker’s and brewer’s)
  • Yeast extracts (e.g., Marmite, Vegemite)

    

High Purine List

These foods have high purine levels: and should be eliminated when a gout attack is under way, otherwise use care. When I feel an attack is coming I eliminate everything on this list for two weeks at least. 

  • Alcohol
  • Fish (including shellfish, those with very high purine content, noted above)
  • Poultry
  • Meat (except those with very high purine content, noted above)
  • Ascorbic acid (only restrict during gout attack)
  • Vitamin B3 (only restrict during gout attack)

    

Moderately High Purine List

These foods have moderately high purine levels: and should be eliminated when a gout attack is under way, otherwise use some care. I eat many of these often and cocoa almost every day. When I feel an attack is coming I eliminate everything on this list for two weeks at least.

  • Asparagus
  • Cauliflower
  • Chocolate
  • Legumes
  • Lentils
  • Mushrooms
  • Oatmeal
  • Peas (dried)
  • Soy
  • Spinach
  • Tripe

    

Low Purine List

Most other foods have low purine levels:

  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Fruits
  • Gelatin
  • Nuts
  • Tapioca
